Social networking has been a integral part of my personal life since I was admitted to Undergrad studies at MSU. Back then, you had to have a EDU email address to join, so as soon as you were admitted and registered with a school, you would sign up for Facebook. Facebook has been an important way to stay connected with friends as we have gone our separate ways- first to college and then with our professional lives.
As for using Social Networking professionally, it is still something new to me. I've been apart of Linked In for years but only check it every couple of months mainly because there seems to be limited access to colleagues without having a premium account and is utilized as little more than a resume site. Facebook has morphed into a way to share ideas with colleagues. I've had friends ask me about things I'm doing in my class or how I handled a situation and I've gotten great ideas for the classroom from their postings as well.
For my first graders, social networking has not really become part of their lives. Many of their parents give them limited / no access to the internet because of their age. However, as students reach the upper elementary level, I've noticed many of them are getting involved in social networking, or more so, with online collaboration via blogs (mainly as part of their schoolwork).
